Michelin one-star Kaiseki restaurant based on the tradition of tea ceremony, where you can enjoy specialty sushi.

Kaiseki restaurant Tominokoji Yamagishi is located in a quiet spot along Tominokoji-dori street in Kyoto's central city of Kawaramachi. While preserving the tradition of Kyoto cuisine, based on the spirit of hospitality of tea ceremony meals, it offers dishes that allow you to experience the changes of the four seasons with your five senses. At 2017, they received a star from the Michelin Guide for the first time.

After training for a year and a half at Tankuma Kitamise Honten, owner Takahiro Yamagishi trained for 10 years at Ichinoden, known for its Saikyozuke (fish pickled in sweet miso paste) - and was active as head chef. He became independent in October of 2015 and opened Tominokoji Yamagishi. Yamagishi is an intellectual with qualifications as an instructor for tea ceremony, flower arrangement and calligraphy. With a desire to "convey to our customers the Japanese culture and its ways as well as the food", the restaurant uses Kaiseki tools and wares to serve the food, in a way to cherish the basics of Kaiseki and tea ceremony.

We recommend the "freshly cooked rice" from the menu, which uses white rice from Kijimadaira in Nagano prefecture. You can enjoy 3 different flavors and textures of the rice. On the other hand, the "uni sushi roll" is a specialty, served by Yamagishi himself over the counter. Because of the short distance between chef and customer, you can enjoy great conversation.

The restaurant is in a renovated 130 year old building, with the interior designed like a tea room. Cobblestones line the floor from the entrance is just like the garden of a teahouse, leading to the 10-seat counter. We would like for you to enjoy new Kaiseki cuisine created by chef Yamagishi, in a special, extraordinary atmosphere.
