Located about a 10-minute on foot from Gion-Shijo Station in Kyoto. "Kodaiji Wakuden" is situated near Kodaiji Temple and greets visitors with an ambiance of refined elegance. Though Kyoto is packed with venerable restaurants serving Kyoto-style cuisine, "Kodaiji Wakuden" is so famous that it would be no exaggeration to say that everyone knows its name.
Relocated from Kyotango, "Kodaiji Wakuden" was born in 1982. Currently. The main attraction of "Wakuden" is the opportunity to enjoy the very best ingredients in every season. In spring, fans look forward to their Beef and Sansho Flower Hotpot. HAMO(pike conger) and AYU(sweetfish) are summer features. Matsutake is for the autumn ingredient. In winter, Taizagani snow crab is synonymous with Wakuden. Only the snow crabs caught by just 5 small boats sailing from Taiza Port are called “Taizagani,” and these extremely rare crabs are classified in about 50 different grades, despite the extremely small catch. Wakuden uses only the highest grade, allowing customers to savor the very pinnacle of winter delicacies. They also specialize in cuisine with a rich rustic character, serving rare fish, vegetables, and meats such as boar and bear, making it irresistible for those who love wild game.
As for Japanese sake, they serve their own special Aotake-shu, a sake made with groundwater from Kyotango and served in a green bamboo sake set. It has a clean and refreshing flavor that perfectly complements the cuisine. They also have an abundant selection of wine, whiskey, and shochu, etc., that pairs well with the food.
The building inherits the tea-arbor style architecture erected by master carpenter Sotoji Nakamura in 1960, and it has been renovated in the traditional ryotei restaurant style. The interior has 5 private rooms with sunken hearth and hearth-side seating, plus 6 seats at a counter made from a single plank of Japanese red pine. The private rooms are available for groups with children, and are perfect for a quiet meal with family or friends, while the counter seats allow guests to spend a relaxing time with friends and coworkers.
