A modern bistro in Yoyogi-Uehara where you can find great cuisine and great ceramics

Opened in 2017, Aelu is the third restaurant produced by Chihiro Maruyama, the force behind popular restaurants Maison Cinquante Cinq and Lantern. The restaurant name comes from the Japanese word "aeru", which can mean "to dress vegetables" or "to encounter." The restaurant is also a ceramics gallery and shop, so guests can enjoy both delicious food and beautifully crafted ceramics.
Aelu's head chef is Matsuura Shingo, who worked at a restaurant in Nagano for 13 years, followed by 5 years at a Tokyo bistro. The dishes, based on French cuisine, are simple and made with fresh seasonal ingredients. His specialties include raisin butter made with raisins soaked in Sauternes, seafood dishes made with seafood fresh from Toyosu market, and simple roast meat dishes. The food is served on dishes made by skilled artisans for beautiful presentation that serves as part of the restaurant's appeal. There is also a selection of alcohol beverages available, from naturally made wine to a wide range of sakes. The line up of over 100 naturally made wines includes many delicious varieties great even when enjoyed by themselves, and those which give a sense of love and care that goes into making them.
Located right in front of Yoyogi-Uehara Station, Aelu's casual atmosphere draws a local crowd. Just beyond the ceramics gallery sits the restaurant, with plaster walls and wooden tables that reflects the beauty of the ceramics. Both table seats and counter seats are available, along with a wooden deck terrace, making this the perfect restaurant for almost any occasion—from a proper sit down meal to a casual drink at the bar. It's also a great choice for foreign visitors with an interest in Japanese ceramics.

    会社の同僚と平日の夜に訪問しました。店内はワインのボトルやレコードが飾られており、非常に洗練されたムーディーな雰囲気で代々木上原らしさを感じました。この日はコースを注文しました。始めのタルトレットとレバーパテが絶品で、スープ、前菜など季節感のある食材を使いながら、次の料理が楽しみになるリズム感の良いコース構成。また、ナチュールワインなども豊富あるようで店頭横には器のギャラリーショップが併設されているところにワインセラーもありました。久しぶりに代々木上原に伺いましたが、洗練された素晴らしいディナーを楽しむことができて非常に楽しい時間でした。ご馳走様でした。
