This spin-off of the revered three-star Sushi Sakai serves confident, wholehearted sushi from the chef’s best apprentices

Gahoujin is located on the third floor of a building in the high-end commercial district of Nishinakasu in Fukuoka, a short seven-minute walk from Nakasukawabata Station next to Fukuoka Station.

The restaurant is a second location of the three-star Sushi Sakai and led by chef-owner Daigo Sakai, who trained at a sushi-kappo restaurant in Fukuoka, honed his culinary skills at a two-star restaurant, Sushidokoro Umi, in Aoyama, before launching Sushi Sakai in 2013. Gahoujin finally opened seven years later, in August 2020. The sushi served at Gahoujin is prepared by his apprentices who learned to make sushi from the heart.

The restaurant takes its name from a Zen concept that refers to the importance of encounters with people. This reflects the wish of chef Sakai to express his gratitude to both customers and apprentices for their support. The ingredients are sourced not directly from producers but from trusted brokers in Fukuoka City Central Wholesale Market, Yanagibashi Rengo Market, and Toyosu Market, a sign of Sakai’s confidence in his partners. The sushi rice is prepared by seasoning rice with a blend of two varieties of red vinegar, with a flavor exemplified by the restaurant’s nigiri sushi with tuna. The most popular dish is one of sliced raw puffer fish dressed in anglerfish liver sauce, a delicacy served only between October and March. Reminiscent of foie gras, the sauce’s flavor is very rich and creamy, and is a favorite of connoisseurs. In addition, the restaurant offers more than 15 varieties of sake from around Japan, selected based on the season or month of the year, a wide selection of white wines, champagnes and red wines.

Like Sushi Sakai, the interior at Gahoujin is elegant and understated, with a sukiya-style structure designed by Shinji Maeda, a first-rate architect in the style. With only seven counter seats, the small space creates an intimate and relaxing atmosphere and encourages conversations between the owner and guests. The dinnerware is mostly made up of Karatsu ware and also includes handmade pieces by local artisans. These features make Gahoujin perfect for dinners with clients, date nights, birthdays, and other occasions. Please enjoy excellent sushi made by chef Sakai’s trusted apprentices.
