Yuzuya Hotel Isshinkyo is a Japanese restaurant on the first floor of Yuzuya Hotel, a traditional Japanese guesthouse located next to Yasaka Shrine in Gion, Kyoto, and renovated into a Japanese auberge from a decades-old building in 2005. As the dining area of the auberge, Isshinkyo delights overnight guests and day visitors alike with the seasonal flavors of Kyoto.

General Chef Kazuyoshi Kimura, who also serves as General Chef at six affiliated restaurants he oversees in Kyoto, including Yuzuya Hotel Isshinkyo and Gion Mametora, offers dishes featuring Kyoto vegetables at Isshinkyo to celebrate Japan’s seasonal bounty year-round. In particular, as indicated by its name, the restaurant is well known for its specialty dishes using yuzu citrus, whose origin of cultivation is believed to be Mizuo in Kyoto.

The menu features different types of yuzu from around Japan, depending on the season, such as green yuzu in spring and summer and yellow yuzu in autumn and winter, and they are served with seasonal ingredients, such as bamboo shoots, salt-grilled sweetfish, and pike conger. Perhaps the most unmissable dish is the Yuzu Citrus Porridge – this signature dish attracts gourmands for its rich juice squeezed from the whole yuzu fruit on top of the rice porridge. Yuzu Nabe hotpot featuring seasonal ingredients is also popular for the savory rice porridge made with bonito and kelp broth at the end of the meal.

The drinks menu also features yuzu, offering yuzu liqueur as well as yuzu juice for those who do prefer non-alcoholic options.

Set in a dignified, tranquil space on a side street in Gion, Yuzuya Hotel Isshinkyo welcomes guests with warm hospitality like a mountain villa and ushers them up the 20 or so stone stairs to the front entrance with cooking stoves. Behind that, there is an elegant space with antique furniture and tableware, with a main dining room dotted with tables (7 total) and a horigotatsu-style counter (4 seats), as well as a tatami-floored reception room (seating up to 28 guests).
