A 2-star Japanese restaurant in Gion helmed by a master of Kyoto cuisine who has continued to pursue true deliciousness for years

Located on an atmospheric street that is a 10-minute walk from Keihan Gion-Shijo Station at the center of Gion, the main downtown area of Kyoto, Ryō-shō is helmed by Chef Makoto Fujiwara, a master of Japanese cuisine who has continued to pursue true deliciousness for years.

Chef Fujiwara trained at Gion Maruyama for 13 years, honed his culinary skills at Kappo Fuji, and served as a chef at Kodaiji Jugyuan before he opened his own restaurant, Ryō-shō, in January 2022. The restaurant’s name, Ryō-shō, means lofty aspirations. Working with Hiroyuki Jinguji, the restaurant’s Manager/Sommelier, who has been intimately familiar with the chef’s cuisine since his days at Kodaiji Jugyuan, Chef Fujiwara strives to make the restaurant a notch above the rest, offering unforgettable dishes and dining experiences in extraordinary settings.
Each meal consists of 10 to 12 courses, starting with appetizers and ending with desserts. Sourced from local farms and the sea, the freshest ingredients of the day are transformed into elaborate dishes right in front of guests at the counter.
What is noteworthy is the marriage of authentic Japanese dishes and wines selected by Sommelier Jinguji from some 700 bottles in stock, in accordance with the food served and the preferences of each guest. The Japanese sake list is also substantial, with locally brewed sake from Kyoto as well as Ishidaya and Nizaemon from Kokuryu Sake Brewery in Fukui.

Designed by Nakamura Sotoji Construction, a building company renowned for the Sukiya-style architecture it worked on for a number of famous restaurants, Ryō-shō has a main dining room with a counter made of solid hinoki cypress (seating up to eight guests) on the first floor and a private room (also seating up to eight guests) with a discreet alcove on the second floor. The restaurant also attracts many diners for its beautiful dishware and stemware, such as Old Imari, vintage and modern pottery, and refreshing crystal glasses from Baccarat and Lalique. Offering the best of Kyoto cuisine, Ryō-shō is the perfect place to dine with your family, significant other, friends, food lovers, or colleagues. Please enjoy the extraordinary dishes and dining experiences in memorable settings created by the aspiring chef and sommelier.

※ Awarded 2 star on world-renowned gourmet guide Kyoto-Osaka 2023.

One of the finest meals I have ever had. Sublime food - every dish seasonal, deceptively simple, and bursting with flavour. Magnificent ingredients treated with the greatest of respect and care. Charming service in a beautiful room. I cannot recommend this restaurant more highly.

Excellent food and service in a beautful setting. The homemade ice cream course was my favourite bite of vanilla ice cream in my life!

This was definitely our best meal un Kyoto. Every dish was superb with a fine balance of flavor, refinement and skillful preparation. Some of the dishes, like the sticky rice appetizer and the silky bean curd skin were revelations. Its location in the discreet section of Gion was a plus. Highly recommend!
