Tokyo, Kagurazaka
Explore Tokyo's French Connection

An enchanting district nestled within Tokyo’s Shinjuku ward, Kagurazaka offers a captivating blend of old-world charm and contemporary cultural elegance. Known historically as a lively Geisha enclave, this compact and stylish neighborhood has evolved into the “Little Paris” of Tokyo, with the significant Gallic presence in the area underscored by numerous French patisseries and bistros, in addition to the French-Japanese Institute of Tokyo and French Lycée.

A treasure trove of cultural and culinary delights

Present-day Kagurazaka retains the allure of both its historical roots and modern influences. Strolling through its cobblestone streets, visitors are greeted by a delightful mix of chic cafes and boutiques mingling seamlessly with traditional temples and shrines. The grandeur of Zenkokuji temple stands as an enduring emblem of Kagurazaka’s heritage, while the recently renovated Akagi shrine epitomizes the fascinating integration of tradition with modernity. A short venture to neighboring Iidashi offers the opportunity to visit Tokyo Daijingu, a venerated “power spot” within the heart of Tokyo. Kagurazaka’s winding alleyways, known as yokocho, reveal a treasure trove of hidden delights. Here, wandering travelers will encounter numerous ryotei, high-end traditional Japanese restaurants that serve the renowned Kaiseki style of dining, as well as discreet haute eateries offering some of the finest French cuisine in Tokyo. The wider area boasts innovative fusion restaurants that marry the best of culinary worlds.

A summertime spectacle

A highlight of the district’s calendar is the Kagurazaka Matsuri, held annually in July. A key attraction is the Awa Odori dance parade, a time-honored tradition that originates in the Shikoku region of Japan. Spectators are treated to a kaleidoscope of color, sound and activity, with rows of food stalls and cultural performances complementing the festivities. Kagurazaka is primarily accessible by rail, granting seamless access to and from iconic destinations such as the imperial palace, Tokyo Dome, and the neon-lit streets of Shinjuku, all within convenient reach of a single train journey.
