A fine seafood restaurant that changes the concept of how a delicious fish should be.
Aoyagi is located near Gojo station, in a relaxed neighborhood between Kyoto Station and Shijo Station. There is no sign at the entrance, and the counter seats a maximum of 6 people. It is a hidden retreat where you can go and enjoy the delicious taste of seafood cuisine.
The restaurant's owner, Akihiro Aoyagi, trained in Kyoto from the age of 24 and in 2007 he opened Seafood Cuisine Aoyagi. Its 10th anniversary was a turning point in the restaurant's evolution, and in January 2018, Mr. Aoyagi took the next step and changed the restaurant's name to Aoyagi. Rather than simply buying and offering decent seafood, Mr. Aoyagi's aim is to change his customer's experience of seafood, as well as the concept of what makes fish delicious.
Mr. Aoyagi has 10 years of experience in specializing in seafood, so when purchasing his ingredients he carefully selects only high quality fish and shellfish, regardless of price. The restaurant serves seafood in its best condition, such as char-grilled fish, fried food, as well as other dishes, and produces dishes which express the sense of the 4 seasons. To convey the delicacy of each of the 14 types of seafood, seasoning is added sparingly without overpowering the dish, this in turn enhances the flavor of the ingredients. In addition, dishes focus not only on seafood but also seasonal vegetables in order for the customer to experience the sense of each season.
The cuisine is not only delicious by itself but also good when accompanied by sake. The sake is not so dry, the restaurant uses the daiginjo shu, a sweeter type of Sake. Wine options are limited to champagne and white wine, but there is a variety of French wines to choose from, both of which can be paired. It is the seafood restaurant that you can visit to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime flavor.
2-minute walk from Gojo Station on the Kyoto Municipal Subway.
