The allure of the home-made soba noodles and the proprietress in Japanese clothing.
Soba Furaikyo is located in a residential area, 4-minute walk from Tama Plaza Station, and about 20 minutes from Shibuya by express train. It is popular within local customers, especially for the hand-made soba noodles. It has been awarded Michelin one-star.
The owner Takanobu Yoshida, after working at French restaurants, trained at the famous Soba Kuruyama in Hachioji Tokyo for 3 years and opened his own restaurant in July 2006. Based on the concept of a soba restaurant where the proprietress serves customers in traditional Japanese clothing, the owner’s wife wears a kimono to welcome the customers. The interior gives you a feminine impression with fresh flowers dotted around the establishment.
The buckwheat seeds used at Soba Furaikyo are organically grown from Niigata, the same which are used at the restaurant where he was trained, Soba Kurumaya. He also purchased from Gunma, Hokkaido and Aizu. The flour is home-made at the restaurant. Two kinds of soba flour are blended together, and to make delicious hot soba, 90 percent buckwheat and 10 percent binding agent are used.
The courses blend Japanese and western style dishes, for example western appetizers like uncured ham, liver paste, and traditional-style noodles, seasonal dishes, tempura soba etc. On Saturdays and Sundays, customers can also enjoy a Pocket Concierge exclusive premium course for 10,000 yen, which includes hand-made soba noodles made from Gensoba. There are 10 kinds of sake available which match well with the soba, along with two types of wine, red and white, from France and Spain.
Since Mr. Yoshida is from Yamaguchi Prefecture, the restaurant has a modern design based on the earthen walls of a castle in Hagi city, where he spent his high school life. There are 31 seats in total, including 7 counter eats and table seats for between 2-4 people. By providing partitions between each table, customers can enjoy their meals in a setting similar to that of a semi-private room. In addition to women's associations, class reunions, anniversaries, and celebrations, the restaurant has a wide range of uses for any age group, from children to the elderly. Why not spend some time in a relaxing place where different generations can be found.
