Look for the lattice paper lantern. A Kappo cuisine restaurant hidden in the back streets of Gion

"Gion Shinbashi Nakatani" is situated quite close to Gion’s famous Tatsumi Bridge. Step into a little side street off of Shinbashi Avenue, and you’ll see a lattice paper lantern. That’s the sign. Hidden from the main thoroughfare, this best-kept secret radiates the elegance of Gion.

The owner-chef Mr. Nakatani has dedicated over 20 years of his life to Japanese cuisine, honing his craft at many prestigious restaurants, including those of Kyoto’s famous hotels. His cooking features a base of flavorful, aromatic dashi broth, made with carefully selected Kombu from Rishiri kelp and dried tuna. This is combined with rare wild fish shipped directly from Awaji Island, without going through market wholesalers, and seasonal ingredients like Kyoto vegetables grown by contracted farmers. His specialties are the deluxe Hassun platter, a product of his culinary ingenuity, and the Donabe rice, seasonal ingredients cooked in an earthenware pot. Please take your time and savor the artistically presented seasonal flavors.

Mr. Nakatani says, “This may seem like a high-brow establishment, but you’re welcome to come by yourself and just enjoy a meal.” Featuring a beautiful wooden counter, the restaurant’s interior projects a dignified ambiance, and the subtly placed seasonal flowers suggest attentiveness to small details.

You can sit at the counter, conversing with a friend while admiring the owner’s skill, or entertain colleagues or a special guest at the Japanese-style hori-gotatsu seating. Either way, this restaurant allows for a wonderful evening with quality food and drink.
