A playground for adults fusing cuisine, fashion, and art
"Courage" is nestled among a variety of popular restaurants in a calm part of Azabu-Jūban. The owner is Zino Aizawa, who worked at the popular Italian restaurant "Il Teatorino di Salone" and also for "Shimogamo Saryo" - spearheaded by Kundō Koyama. He sought to realize her ideal of an "enjoyably superior dining experience" in the restaurant and opened in March 2018.
With a concept of "restaurant x fashion x art" that fuses East and West in cuisine and design, the restaurant offers a wholly new dining experience. Aizawa spent his youth in the frothy years of Japan's bubble economy. "Courage" is in some respects a nod to that period, with a rich sensuality and seductiveness full of elements intended to excite guests. In front of the restaurant is a variety of plants and paintings, and Aizawa wants it to be a place for young artists to express themselves.
The chef is Kenji Ōi perfected his skills at the Michelin 3-star restaurant "Cà Sento" in Kobe. With Kota Kobayashi who was trained in Spain, Yusuke Ogura who has worked in a Japanese restaurant in Germany, and Masato Oka, the sommelier from French restaurant "Tateru Yoshino", a range of individuals with experience both in Japan and abroad have assembled in one location. As Team "Courage", they present a Tokyo cuisine based on Italian and French cooking and infused with the essence of Spanish and Japanese flavor sensibilities. The courses are sensitive to a season, and in all 11 carefully crafted dishes, a variety of delightful flairs come together to create an experience brimming with originality - such as the starter that comes on a plate inspired by traditional Japanese paper. By selecting an alcohol or tea pairing, the whole meal is made more fun between the space, the food, and the drinks. For anniversaries and other events, a birthday "chocolate pen art" can be reserved 10 days in advance for 20,000 yen (not including tax), making a wonderful once-in-a-lifetime gift.
The restaurant seats up to 24 guests, with 6 tables covered in striking red tablecloths that can seat 4 each. It's a great spot for dates or for visiting with your close friends. With both great flavors and fun things combined in one uplifting space, it is truly a "playground for adults."
