A kappō-style Japanese cuisine restaurant in the exclusive Gion district, perfecting seasonal cuisine and hospitality

A 4-minute walk from Gion Shijō Station in Kyoto, "Gion Kon" is a kappō style Japanese restaurant located one block off of Hanamikoji Street. A well-liked shop of long standing, the shop has been run by Konyōsuke since he took over in 2011. With a history of a strict referral only policy for new customers and having allowed no outside news coverage, Gion Kon is a shop for those in the know, still frequented by the same local business owners and geisha who have been our patrons for generations.

Mr. Kon’s motto: “Asking how we can best serve the customer is the starting point for making fine cuisine.” We serve food that should be consumed at a high temperature while it is warm, and when we want the customer to enjoy a dish at a lower temperature, we serve it while it is still cold. We also consult with our guests on their tastes and preferences and adjust quantity and flavoring to suit the needs of each individual patron. Our perennial specialties include “Dutch style” abalone, and a “Japanese style” steak cooked using a steaming method over indirect heat. On top of these, we offer firefly squid shabu-shabu in the spring, and in the summer guests can try conger eel served as shabu-shabu, poached, or as sashimi with Yakishimo-style scorched skin. From matsutake mushrooms in autumn to crab shabu-shabu in winter, our seasonal specialties are especially popular with guests. In support of these dishes are the many masterpieces lined up behind the bar. We recommend Japanese sake to accompany our dishes, and we always have 5-10 seasonal offerings available to choose from.

Originally built as an Ochaya tea house 170 years ago, the entrance area is maintained in a style where guests remove their shoes on a packed dirt floor before entering the main restaurant area. In addition to a 13 seat counter area and private rooms that accommodate 4-5 guests, there is a 10 person dining room on the second floor that can be used for both daily dining and a wide variety of events. Now guests can experience first hand the rare kappō tastes and hospitality that have only been available to a select group of regular patrons in the past.
