A world gourmet guide award Tokyo-Style Sushi Restaurant, Beloved in Kyodo Since 1937

Just a 3-minute walk from the South Exit of Kyodo Station on Odakyu Line is the quiet storefront of a world gourmet guide award sushi restaurant ""Sushidokoro Kiraku."" The venerable restaurant was founded in 1937 and underwent a renewal in 2004. Third-generation proprietor Tatsuhito Ota, training at Kiraku since he was in his 20s, continues to carry forward traditional techniques and tastes handed down without break from a predecessor to apprentice.

Under the motto ""offer authentic Tokyo-style sushi at reasonable prices in a familiar local neighborhood,"" he serves sushi without compromise. Ota himself heads out on foot to the Toyosu Market (earlier Tsukiji Market) to personally carefully select seafood, piece by piece, from fresh seafood vendors that also supply famous sushi shops and other Japanese restaurants. The trust that Kiraku has built up over many years is what enables the procurement of these ingredients. The vinegared rice that brings out the inherent flavor of the seafood is made with 20% red vinegar that features a rich savoriness. The wasabi that bolsters the sushi overall, too, is procured directly from trusted farmers and is selected for aroma and stickiness that pairs well with sushi. The sushi created from these ingredients is infused with a power unique to ""Kiraku"", alive today with ties to history.

""Kiraku"" offers Japanese sake made by alumni of the Tokyo University Of Agriculture Department of Fermentation Science, another sign of Kiraku's commitment to its beloved local area. The 10 or so sake brands always available are those from brewers whom Ota has met in person, and include Ishizuchi from Ehime and Sookuu from Fushimi, Kyoto.
Kiraku's interior features a chic and modern atmosphere with only counter seating for nine. Designer and regular customer Yasuo Kondo oversaw the design for the shop renewal. Kiraku offers a warm, relaxed space with a sense of security that brings customers back again and again. Together with sushi, the just-right sense of distance for enjoying conversation with Ota may also be one of the appeals that makes Kiraku a regular stop. English is spoken at ""Kiraku"", making it a spot for treating guests from overseas as well.
