Capturing the charm of Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture to the world, Miyake Akira specializes in kaiseki dishes served by the city’s Special Goodwill Ambassador for Japanese Cuisine

A three-minute walk from Roppongi Station in Tokyo, Miyake Akira is a kaiseki restaurant that encapsulates the best of Japanese cuisine and culture.

Hailing from Tajimi City in Gifu Prefecture, owner and chef Akira Miyake serves as a proud ambassador of tourism for his hometown, and was given the status of Japanese Cuisine Special Goodwill Ambassador by the nation’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. In 2014, after a successful stint at the unagi specialist Yuugetsu in Tajimi, Miyake took on the challenge of opening Miyake Akira in Tokyo in August 2020.

“I want guests to enjoy Japanese cuisine and Minoyaki,” he says, referring to the regional style of pottery found in his home region, used to present dishes to his discerning guests. He also favours Wara River sweetfish and other specialty ingredients from Gifu, carefully selecting high quality ingredients from across Japan.

The restaurant’s signature dish celebrates Miyazaki caviar, from Japanese sturgeon. The creamy, rounded flavour, distinct from traditional caviar, is a selling point with the restaurant’s loyal following. A dish of grilled eel coated with a rich, traditional sauce used for over 130 years at Yuugetsu, has an exquisite taste. Meanwhile, a 15-strong selection of Japanese sakes complements a meal without overpowering, while a Southern France-leaning wine list also pairs well with the grilled eel. As for alcohol-free options, guests are offered Royal Blue Tea of outstanding quality.

Guests are offered either one of eight counter seats, or a private room with space for six, imbued with warmth of Gifu; a wooden counter and chairs transported from the region, for example, or Tajimi City tiles that embellish the interior. Additionally, the chef also offers guests dinnerware from Minoyaki to accentuate each dish, carefully designed by Miyake himself.

With the charm and cuisine of Gifu in a cosmopolitan setting, Miyake Akira makes for an excellent venue for dates and gatherings.
