Inheriting the spirit and tradition of the legendary Tempura Yamanoue, this restaurant in Tokyo Midtown showcases the traditional flavors of tempura to connoisseurs from around the world

Tempura Yamanoue Roppongi, perched on the third floor of the Tokyo Midtown Garden Terrace in Akasaka, is a sister restaurant to the original Tempura Yamanoue, a renowned tempura restaurant at the Hilltop Hotel. Tempura Yamanoue shares a history with Hilltop Hotel in Kanda Surugadai, Tokyo, since both opened in 1954. The Roppongi location was established to showcase the traditional flavors of the long-established restaurant famously patronized by many literary greats, this time to a new crowd of connoisseurs drawn to Tokyo Midtown.

Tempura Yamanoue Roppongi offers traditional tempura wrapped in a silky, light batter. This tempura is deep fried precisely in a blend of two types of sesame oil, cold-pressed Taihaku and toasted Genuine sesame oil. The oil is used generously and replaced while the flavor is at its peak, and never added incrementally. Among the tempura ingredients, vegetables take pride of place at Tempura Yamanoue, and are carefully selected by a knowledgeable buyer who visits producers around Japan to purchase the best-quality produce for each restaurant. A tempura of young green onion shoots and trough shell (duck clam) adductors, wrapped in seaweed and batter, are exclusively offered at Tempura Yamanoue Roppongi, and enjoy great popularity.

The iceboxes used at the main location are also used at the Roppongi location. Following the traditional techniques dating back to the opening of the main location, Tempura Yamanoue Roppongi controls the humidity of each ingredient by laying out plate ice.

The drink menu offers a wide variety of offerings to meet the demands of the restaurant’s discerning guests, including sparkling wines to celebrate anniversaries and other special occasions, as well as six each of red and white wines. In addition, six varieties of sake are offered to guests, including precious sake like Higan from Niigata.

The restaurant’s dining spaces are elevated by muntin works and coffered ceilings to invite guests to discover the flavors of Edomae tempura. On one side of the main dining room is an L-shaped counter (with 11 seats) made of hinoki cypress that is hundreds of years old. On the other side are ceiling-high glass windows that offer seasonal views of Roppongi, such as cherry blossoms in spring and fireworks in summer. Table seats and tatami-floored private rooms are also available for guests.

These features make Tempura Yamanoue Roppongi perfect for a variety of occasions, whether private or business related. Guests are invited to enjoy traditional Edomae tempura with family, partners, friends, colleagues or clients.
