Enjoy exquisite kaiseki cuisine (meal served before a ceremonial tea) in Kyoto reinvented by a chef with an eye for authenticity and a sense of aesthetics

A 3-minute walk from Gojo Station in Kyoto takes you to Godan Miyazawa, a kaiseki restaurant set in a tranquil residential area down a narrow street from Karasuma Street. The restaurant is run by Chef Masato Miyazawa, who was captivated by the art of the tea ceremony and the charm of tableware and developed his eye and taste for authenticity while learning Japanese cuisine at Kakiden, a renowned cha-kaiseki restaurant (for meals served in the tea ceremony). In 2007, he opened his own restaurant, Jiki Miyazawa, which soon attracted throngs of people from inside and outside Japan. Then, he opened his second restaurant, Godan Miyazawa, in July 2014.

Chef Miyazawa sticks to the principle of doing what he likes to do. For example, he uses ingredients he likes regardless of brands and common values. The dishes and environment created by the skilled and tasteful chef who learned from the best and who sincerely enjoys entertaining guests are pleasant beyond description. In particular, Chef Miyazawa values personal ties. In fact, most of the ingredients are sourced directly from producers with whom he has forged bonds. For example, Koshihikari rice is delivered from a rice farmer in Shiga. The restaurant’s specialties include “Grilled Sesame Tofu of the Season” reinvented from Grilled Sesame Tofu, a signature menu item of Jiki Miyazawa, by mixing in seasonal ingredients, such as grilled eggplant, corn, and burdock. The rich, creamy flavor of the dish captivates the taste buds of patrons. The sake list offers 17 labels of Japanese sake from around the country. Carefully selected by the chef to his taste, they all go well with the dishes. The soft drink menu also offers a wide selection of homemade cold brew tea, such as Himalayan Tea, Yabukita Tea, and Lemon Oolong Tea made with lemongrass, so that guests who do not want to drink alcohol can enjoy food and drink pairings.

With a wickerwork ceiling and natural wood finishes, the main dining room is adorned with minimal decorations to highlight the simple beauty of the design, like a tea house, and furnished with an eight-seat counter. In addition, there is a private room seating up to five people. Families with children are welcomed into the private room. The collection of tableware is selected by Chef Miyazawa, who had been exposed to a wide variety of authentic tableware that laid the foundation for contemporary tableware. Serving the essence of kaiseki cuisine, Godan Miyazawa is suitable for different occasions, such as entertaining your business clients, having a romantic dinner with your partner, eating out with your family, or welcoming guests from abroad.
