1-star Chinese cuisine in Osaka that is continually challenging innovation with a modern approach

The restaurant was founded by the first generation in Nishitemma, 1947. Koji Azuma, the third generation, trained for 6 years in Akasaka’s Ishingo and 6 years as head chef in Shinbashi’s Bifun Azuma, after which he opened Chi-Fu in 2012. The name of the restaurant is derived from Chinois-Fumé (the fragrance of China) and Chinois-Futurism (the future of China), to make Chi-Fu. Chef Azuma takes traditional Chinese cuisine inherited from his grandfather and father, and leads us onto a new stage with innovative cooking techniques.

For example, in the hands of the chef, fó tiào quiáng (a type of shark fin soup) – a luxurious soup which uses dashi (soup stock) from top quality dried seafood – becomes a dish which replaces dried seafood with ingredients from the mountains such as Jinhua Chinese ham, shiitake mushrooms and soft-shelled turtle wrapped in wonton, with popular ingredients like beef tendon and dried sour plum. These adventurous dishes are only possible because the chef has properly studied the ABCs of Chinese cuisine passed down from ancient times.

They have 3,000 bottles of wine in the cellar, which is said to be No.1 in Kansai area. One of the enjoyments is the harmony of wine with as much history as the Chinese cuisine, selected by a sommelier. The simple and modern interior of the restaurant exudes a sophisticated atmosphere. This is where you would want to bring that important someone for a meal.
